Lola de Miguel presenta en esta nueva exposición grupal,  su primera en España, tres cuerpos de obra que dialogan entre sí desde la abstracción: Memoria sentada, Donde habita la memoria y Memoria zen. En conjunto, la muestra propone una exploración de la memoria no como relato lineal, sino como materia viva: fragmentada, sensorial y en constante reconfiguración.

Memoria zen

El tercer cuerpo es una serie de nueve piezas. Estas obras condensan momentos de meditación, donde la práctica reduce la experiencia a tres elementos esenciales: atención, espacio y presente. La abstracción aquí se vuelve más contenida, más silenciosa. No hay gesto innecesario; cada trazo responde a una economía de intención. La memoria deja de ser acumulación y se convierte en vacío activo, en disponibilidad. Lo que se presenta no es lo recordado, sino la condición que hace posible recordar sin apego.

 

 

Memoria asentada

La primera pieza, de gran formato —superior a los cuatro metros—, se despliega como un ejercicio de “connecting the dots” emocional y pictórico. La superficie está dominada por negros densos, trabajados con pinceladas que oscilan entre lo contenido y lo expansivo. Sobre ese fondo emergen acentos cobrizos y dorados, que operan como vectores de ambición y pulsión vital. El azul introduce una dimensión espiritual, casi respiratoria, mientras que los blancos y beiges articulan un territorio de asentamiento y aceptación. No hay narrativa explícita: la obra se construye como un campo de tensiones donde la memoria se sienta, se posa, y encuentra una forma de permanencia.

Donde habita la memoria

El segundo conjunto adopta la forma de un tríptico. Su origen se sitúa en los paseos de la artista por París, en esos encuentros silenciosos con objetos cargados de historia: una taza, un cuadro, una escultura. Elementos cotidianos que, sin embargo, contienen múltiples capas de memoria acumulada. La obra no representa estos objetos; los evoca. Cada panel funciona como un umbral donde lo contemplado se transforma en huella. Aquí, la memoria no es introspectiva, sino relacional: habita en lo que ha sido tocado, mirado, usado. El tríptico articula esa experiencia en tres tiempos, tres respiraciones, tres formas de aproximarse a lo bello como depósito de vidas anteriores.

En su conjunto, la exposición plantea una cartografía íntima donde la memoria transita entre lo denso y lo ligero, entre lo vivido y lo contemplado, entre la materia y el vacío. Todas las obras, de carácter abstracto, rehúyen la representación directa para situarse en un territorio más esencial: el de la experiencia.

52 Greene Street,  Second Floor Gallery, New York City, is pleased to announce a new solo exhibition by Lola de Miguel, EXPANSION, her tenth solo show in Manhattan, 9 acrylic paintings in very large format, opening September 27th through  October 9th, 2024.

Renowned artist Lola de Miguel unveils her latest body of work, EXPANSION, a large-scale abstract series created in the aftermath of the global pandemic. As the world continues to navigate uncertain times, de Miguel invites viewers to explore personal growth and self-discovery through her deeply reflective and emotionally charged works. This highly anticipated exhibition will be on display in Soho, showcasing her unique vision shaped by the turbulence of our era.

Drawing inspiration from her holistic worldview and personal development journey, de Miguel's new collection delves into the concept of expansion—both personal and societal. Each piece offers a nuanced perspective, reflecting themes of transformation, hope, and resilience. Some works express the possibilities of growth and change, while others reflect the calm and simplicity of being present in the moment. De Miguel also touches upon more complex issues such as the political ambitions of nations seeking expansion, darkening our collective reality. Her exploration reminds us that art, in times of uncertainty, can offer solace and guidance.

The artist cites two powerful quotes by Mahatma Gandhi as key influences for this series: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world,” and “Be truthful, gentle, and fearless.” These meditative works inspire viewers to reflect on their own potential for growth and encourage them to embrace their personal journey of expansion. As de Miguel asserts, "Once you embrace your potential, the sky's the limit."

Born in a small town in Spain, Lola de Miguel has lived in six different countries, reflecting her bold spirit and international perspective. She studied painting at the prestigious Art Students League of New York, where she had the honor of learning from notable mentors such as Larry Poons, James Little, and Ronnie Landfield. Her work has been widely exhibited, with nine solo shows in Manhattan, including African Memories, Underwater Emotions, New York City Inspires, The Jungle, Mother Earth Love, Amazonian, Galaxies, Floating Colors, and Essence.

With EXPANSION, her 10th solo exhibition, de Miguel continues to challenge and inspire her audience, inviting them to reflect on personal growth and the pursuit of peace amidst the turbulence of today’s world.
