MEMORIA Casa4 MADRID, SPAIN

MEMORIA

Press Release EXPANSION

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

About the exhibition:

52 Greene Street,  Second Floor Gallery, New York City, is pleased to announce a new solo exhibition by Lola de Miguel, EXPANSION, her tenth solo show in Manhattan, 9 acrylic paintings in very large format, opening September 27th through  October 9th, 2024.

Lola de Miguel, SKY'S THE LIMIT, part of EXPANSION Series, 60” x 72”

Renowned artist Lola de Miguel unveils her latest body of work, EXPANSION, a large-scale abstract series created in the aftermath of the global pandemic. As the world continues to navigate uncertain times, de Miguel invites viewers to explore personal growth and self-discovery through her deeply reflective and emotionally charged works. This highly anticipated exhibition will be on display in Soho, showcasing her unique vision shaped by the turbulence of our era.

Drawing inspiration from her holistic worldview and personal development journey, de Miguel's new collection delves into the concept of expansion—both personal and societal. Each piece offers a nuanced perspective, reflecting themes of transformation, hope, and resilience. Some works express the possibilities of growth and change, while others reflect the calm and simplicity of being present in the moment. De Miguel also touches upon more complex issues such as the political ambitions of nations seeking expansion, darkening our collective reality. Her exploration reminds us that art, in times of uncertainty, can offer solace and guidance.

The artist cites two powerful quotes by Mahatma Gandhi as key influences for this series: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world,” and “Be truthful, gentle, and fearless.” These meditative works inspire viewers to reflect on their own potential for growth and encourage them to embrace their personal journey of expansion. As de Miguel asserts, "Once you embrace your potential, the sky's the limit."

Born in a small town in Spain, Lola de Miguel has lived in six different countries, reflecting her bold spirit and international perspective. She studied painting at the prestigious Art Students League of New York, where she had the honor of learning from notable mentors such as Larry Poons, James Little, and Ronnie Landfield. Her work has been widely exhibited, with nine solo shows in Manhattan, including African Memories, Underwater Emotions, New York City Inspires, The Jungle, Mother Earth Love, Amazonian, Galaxies, Floating Colors, and Essence.

With EXPANSION, her 10th solo exhibition, de Miguel continues to challenge and inspire her audience, inviting them to reflect on personal growth and the pursuit of peace amidst the turbulence of today’s world.

PRESS RELEASE Nov 25th, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

About the exhibition:
52 Greene Street, Third Floor Gallery, New York City, is pleased to announce a new solo exhibition by Lola de Miguel, Essence, her ninth solo show in Manhattan, 13 acrylic paintings in large format, opening Dec 9th through Dec 21, 2022.

Part of the Essence exhibit by Lola de Miguel 60" x 48"

With this new collection, de Miguel returns to Soho with a body of work that she has created in the aftermath of the global pandemic as New York City eased up on restrictions and yet the future remains so uncertain. Inspired by the writings of Viktor E. Frankl, and his elegiac masterpiece, “Man’s Search For Meaning,” de Miguel has been on her own quest to discover personal meaning. The thirteen large format abstract works of this series reflect de Miguel’s exploration into meaning and what is essential—what remains when everything is stripped away and how to preserve that. Using self-inquiry prompts as she created each work, de Miguel asked herself such questions as: What is important to me? What can not be left out? How can I be in harmony? And using the physical act of painting and pouring to create these works of muted, watery calming color that are layered with places of transparency and empty spaces, she depicts her thoughts and meditations, offering a glimpse of what lies below the surface when we go into our minds. “My work became lighter, more transparent and layered,”said de Miguel. “Not only did I use paint on the canvas to reveal what was in my mind, but I also used water, the basic essence of all living things. And just as with the transformative nature of water that changes to exist in a variety of forms, I, too, had to be ready for the unexpected and adapt quickly to circumstances to let my intuition guide me through the process.” With these meditative works de Miguel invites viewers to contemplate their own essence and absolute truth because for de Miguel, as with author/philosopher Viktor Frankl, once you embrace essence, life becomes meaningful.

AMAZONIAN is  the latest work of Lola de Miguel. With this collection de Miguel shows a transition into the way she sees, experiences and feels Nature. We see her evolving from the rotund, solid and bright expression of Nature she displays in her last collections with some pre pandemic works , into a totally new era where colours have a new meaning and a new purpose. De Miguel’s palette, after experiencing the pandemic,  grows into a serene, calm and delicate selection of colours that are letting space for renewed emotions. Her works  have become lighter, atmospheric and ethereal, opening subtle, invisible and almost poetic ways to Light.

Asked about this collection and the evolution of her work, de Miguel said …Nature plays a crucial role in my life, and I feel the urge to generate awareness that will lead to social action to protect it.  This past year gave me the opportunity of experiencing  Nature from a new perspective, feeling as if I was part of it, merging with its spirit in those moments, when there were no other places or other beings to go to. Nature became my ally, my inspiration and colours changing across the seasons brought a deep sense of hope and continuity. I want it to bring a feeling of connectedness and a sense of new beginning. Light and Hope are the ultimate goal, the soul, the beginning and the end of this collection. Nature is bigger than us.

DUE TO COVID 19

Due to Covid 19, there has been a lot of changes regarding Lola de Miguel´s future plan exhibits. The solo show which was planned for May-June 2020 in Greene Street, Soho, NEW YORK, got cancelled,  as well as the Group Show Merit scholarship Winner Exhibit 2020 initially planned for June at the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery, NEW YORK. Lola de Miguel has therefore decided to take a break from the City, from New York and has temporarily moved to the Alps. In April Lola de Miguel installed a new big studio walking distance from the beautiful mountains. Since then her days are dedicated to Nature, Creativity and Spirituality.

The fact that due to the virus she cannot longer work with recycling material from outside ( office buildings etc), has open new paths. She has come back to acrylic painting on canvas but in very big formats. She dreams to do an open air exhibit or be able to put her paintings in big halls, Industrial buildings, Schools, etc. Museums and galleries may be closed but art should be present. Art and color raises our spirits and specially in hard times like Covid 19 are a good antidote against pandemic blues.
